About

Centers for Independent Living, commonly called CILs, are community-based, consumer-controlled, cross-disability, nonresidential nonprofit organizations.

They are not residential facilities or places where people with disabilities live. Instead, they help individuals identify and pursue their own independent-living goals while participating fully in their communities.

Arizona has five Centers for Independent Living, each serving specific counties or tribal communities.

Core Services

Centers for Independent Living provide five core services:

  • Information and referral
  • Independent-living skills training
  • Peer support
  • Individual and systems advocacy
  • Transition services

Individual centers may offer additional services involving housing, transportation, employment, assistive technology, benefits, recreation, youth transition, community participation, and home and community-based services.

Who They Serve

Centers for Independent Living serve people of all ages and all types of disabilities who want greater independence and community participation, including people who are blind or have low vision. Programs and availability vary by center.

Why We Recommend This Resource

Centers for Independent Living help people with disabilities develop practical skills, learn from peers, advocate for their needs, and locate services within their local communities. Because each center serves a defined region, visitors can receive information and referrals relevant to where they live.
