Centers for Independent Living, commonly called CILs, are consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability nonprofit organizations.
They do not provide residential care. Instead, they help people with disabilities establish and pursue their own independent-living goals while participating fully in their communities.
Individual centers may also provide assistance with housing, transportation, employment, assistive technology, accessibility and other local disability resources.
Centers for Independent Living serve people of all ages and with many different disabilities, including individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
Specific programs and service areas vary by center.
